How to Frame Your Pet Portrait (Without Overthinking It)

How to Frame Your Pet Portrait (Without Overthinking It)

The portrait arrives. It looks great. And now you're staring at it thinking "what frame do I put this in?" Don't overthink it. Here are the options, ranked by how much effort you want to put in.

Option 1: Gold Ornate Frame (The Full Commitment)

An ornate gold frame is the historically correct choice for classical art. Carved details, warm gold finish, a look that says "this has been in the family for generations." If you want the full effect, this is it.

Look for antique gold or burnished gold, not bright shiny gold. The warm, slightly aged look complements the painting's palette. You can find these at frame shops and online at a range of price points depending on size.

Option 2: Simple Black Frame (The Safe Choice)

A clean black frame with some depth (at least 2 cm) works in any room and lets the painting do the talking. Modern, versatile, and easy to find. This is what most people choose, and it always works.

Option 3: Float Frame (The Gallery Look)

A float frame mounts the print with a visible gap between the paper and the frame edge, so the print appears to hover. It looks very clean and modern. Works best with larger sizes like our canvas options. This is the option for people who want it to look like a gallery piece.

Matting: Skip It

For classical-style portraits, we recommend no mat. The dark edges of the painting are designed to extend to the border. A white mat creates visual distance that weakens the composition. If you must use a mat, go with warm cream.

Where to Buy

For standard sizes, IKEA's HOVSTA and SILVERHOJDEN ranges are solid and affordable. Online frame shops usually offer the best value. And if you want something custom or need expert advice, a local frame shop is always worth visiting.

Where to Hang

Above a fireplace, on a main living room wall, or at the end of a hallway. Eye level. Good ambient light. A picture light above the frame is a nice touch if you want to go full gallery mode.
